Many Children Like Adults Suffer from Often-Painful Eye conditions Like Dry Eye & Blepharitis - Steve Lichtenstein, M.D.

Children and Dry Eye

Many adults suffer from often-painful eye conditions like dry eye and blepharitis. But surprisingly, these conditions also afflict many children. I see many children in my private practice at the Illinois Eye Center on pediatric ophthalmology. Some of them have blepharitis, where bacteria on the eyelids contribute to inflammation, pain, and a crusty buildup of debris on the eyelids. Others have dry eye, where small glands near the eyelid margins, called meibomian glands, get blocked. These glands produce a crucial layer of the tear film that helps keep the eyes lubricated with tears, so the blockage can cause dry eye or inflammation.

In fact, children can be especially at risk for these conditions. The reason is that these problems are caused or exacerbated by bacteria and tiny parasitic mites that live on the eyelids.  Children may add to the microbial populations by rubbing their eyes or failing to wash their faces frequently.

But recently, I have turned to a more effective and safer approach—an eyelid hygiene product called Avenova with Neutrox from NovaBay Pharmaceuticals. Avenova makes the inflammation, pain and other problems go away—and that the children say that Avenova feels refreshing, brings quick relief and is easy to use. These attributes also increase compliance, which is a cornerstone of any successful treatment.

Chronic Use of Antibiotics Is Not Tenable - Eric Donnenfeld, M.D.

Meibomitis and blepharitis are, as has been previously stated, the most common cause of dry eye disease. They impact on upwards of 20 million patients and are chronic diseases. Treatment is geared toward nutritional supplements such as PRN, lid hygiene and control of the bacterial flora that secrete lipases that break down normal fatty acids (triglycerides) to soaps and fatty acids. Chronic use of antibiotics is not tenable and the use of baby shampoo is actually counterproductive as it facilitates the breakdown of triglycerides (that is what soaps do) and worsens the dry eye disease. The AAO preferred practice paper for blepharitis removed baby shampoo a decade ago for this reason. Avenova from NovaBay Pharma offers a long term solution to the reduction of lid flora without the side effects of antibiotics. [NovaBay laboratory studies in solution show that Avenova kills the bacteria commonly found on eyelids.] We have evaluated Avenova in our practice and we are very happy with our initial results.

One Can Reduce the "Over Colonization" of Demodex - Dick Lindstrom, M.D.

Under the microscope on a wet prep done by two of our interested O.D.s who specialize in Ocular Surface Disease, Avenova appears to kill Demodex, but it takes a while for them to show no movement, which is how we define “death”. It is hard to check the Demodex respirations, heart or brain activity, so when we can observe no movement, we consider them dead. It might be that a short exposure results in ultimate death, but we are looking with the Demodex in a drop of Avenova. One can usually not eradicate Demodex, just like it is hard and perhaps unhealthy to eliminate all bacteria on the skin or lid surface, but, [based on our testing and clinical observation of Avenova in solution] it appears one can reduce the “over colonization” of Demodex with repeated applications. Tea Tree Oil and Cliradex also work. We do not have enough clinical experience to compare one to the other, but Avenova appears to be effective and is very comfortable for the patient.”

I Have to Say That Avenova Is Really Amazing - Scott Kamena, O.D.

I have to say that it (Avenova) really is amazing and patients love it. I can now sell this to them instead of Rx ointments that make them shiny and/or blurry and, even with insurance, usually cost more! My office will be calling you about getting more, if we haven’t already!”

I Found That Many of the OTC Products to be Caustic to the Eye - Bernadette Hromin, M.D.

For my patients suffering from the symptoms of chronic blepharitis, evaporative dry eye, redness and pruritis, I was always searching for a fast and effective [hygiene] treatment. Unfortunately, I found many of the over-the-counter products to be caustic to the eye and periorbital skin, and for some patients even induced an allergic response. Prescription antibiotics, only partially effective at best, were not something my patients wanted to continue taking long term to control symptoms. Therefore, when Avenova eyelid cleanser became available, I decided to give it a try. In my experience using Avenova routinely with my patients over the last year, I have found it to be well-tolerated. In as little as two weeks or less of twice daily usage, eyelid margin redness has dissipated and meibomian gland inspissation has improved. Patients have less incidence of stye formation and remark how their eyes feel better, less itchy and less dry. I am happy to say that my office colleagues, who were initially skeptical at this new blepharitis [hygiene] treatment, have witnessed for themselves the positive results in my patients. They now have become active prescribers and have decided to order their own supply for the office. We use Avenova in virtually all of our dry eye patients and in our pre-surgical cataract patients to decrease bacterial load prior to surgery. It really is an all-around excellent product! Thank you.

His Symptoms Were the Worst I Had Seen - Jeffery Jessup, O.D.

It has been an exciting experience with Avenova. I want to share one case with you briefly: “I have a gentleman in my practice that has been in and out of my care for 25 years. He is a physician at Vanderbilt University and has had a protracted battle with blepharitis for years. He has been treated at Vanderbilt, another well-known eye institute in Cincinnati, and a few other private physicians, all with no substantial relief. He came in unscheduled desperate for help as he was soon scheduled to leave the country for a two-week vacation. His symptoms were the worst I had seen him with. I started him on Avenova on a standard regimen with no other treatment. He phoned me four days later applauding me for the outstanding relief and improvement from the “miracle drug”, as he called it. He truly was jubilant and asked if I would write a note allowing him to pass Avenova through customs for his trip.”

Patients Describe Avenova as Soothing - Stephanie M. Mastores, O.D.

I have been using Avenova for 3 months now. I use it on a variety of lid conditions you would typically think to use a lid cleanser like blepharitis and MGD. It also has been a very beneficial adjunct therapy for any bacterial or viral conditions of the eyes. Anytime I prescribe a topical therapy, I incorporate the lid scrub as well to decrease the bacterial and viral load of the eyes. I have also been able to control some subjective complaints such as burning eyes with Avenova. Patients describe it as soothing with a mild cooling affect. I am very happy to have Avenova as a part of my arsenal to combat lid and eye disease.

M.P. Felt That Restasis Was Making Her Eyelids Peel - Richard L. Lockwood, D.O.

I’ve been seeing M.P. as a patient for many years. She has had symptoms of ocular surface disease since at least September of 2009 with symptoms of dryness and watering of her eyes and crusting of her eyes in the morning. She was treated with artificial tears and Pataday as needed for symptoms of ocular allergies. In March of 2010 her Schirmer scores were 13 mm wetting of the test strip in the right eye and 6 mm wetting of the test strip in the left eye (after the instillation of topical proparacaine). Over the ensuing visits she was also treated for a recurrent corneal erosion in the right eye with Muro 128 – 5% sodium chloride drops in the daytime and Muro 128 – 5% sodium chloride ointment at bedtime. She was also prescribed Erythromycin ointment to instill in her eyes at bedtime and eyelid scrubs with baby shampoo. Bepreve was also tried for her symptoms of ocular allergies and Restasis was prescribed as well. She eventually discontinued the Restasis as she felt that it was making her eyelids peel. After this while attending the Spotlight Symposium for Cataract at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology I heard Dr. Richard Lindstrom report of very favorable results that he had seen with his patients using NovaBay’s Avenova. I thought that at this point I had offered Mona everything else that I could to help with her ongoing symptoms of ocular surface disease. I prescribed Avenova for her on November 17, 2014 and she was delighted with the results. Right away, she got relief from her symptoms that had eluded her (and me) until this time. I saw her again on December 17, 2014 and again on July 16th, 2015; she continues to use Avenova and to enjoy the benefits of relief of her symptoms. Avenova has helped her manage her ocular surface disease that had previously been bothering her for years.

This Novel Solution Has an Impressive Antimicrobial Activity - Ahmad M. Fahmy, OD

Avenova eyelid cleanser is an excellent addition to my treatment of ocular surface disease and blepharitis. This novel solution tested by NovaBay in the laboratory has an impressive antimicrobial activity against the most commonly found bacteria and biofilm along the eyelids and eyelashes.

My patients regularly provide positive feedback while using Avenova; particularly with respect to comfort during application, and with amelioration of itchy, foreign-body sensation of the eyelids.
