From Patients

I am a 58-year-old female and have had problems with my eyes since I was a child. I have a condition that causes swelling of the eyelids – blistering, scaling, burning, stinging, redness and dryness of the eye. My ophthalmologist was concerned by my painful symptoms and referred me to a specialist who concluded the problem was due to an allergic reaction. He prescribed an oral steroid prescription but after a couple of weeks there was no change with my symptoms. After searching the Internet I stumbled upon the NovaBay Pharmaceuticals website. They were introducing a new, breakthrough product for blepharitis called Avenova. The next day I made an appointment with my ophthalmologist. During my examination I told my doctor about Avenova. I think he was as excited as I was that there was a new product for managing blepharitis, so he wrote me a prescription. I noticed a big improvement with my eyes in just one week. Within two weeks they were, and still are, completely cleared up. Many thanks to all of the skilled professionals that have worked so hard to create a [hygiene] product that works for those suffering (as I have) from blepharitis. — MP

As a blepharitis sufferer, my ophthalmologist recommended that I start on a twice-daily regimen of Avenova to combat the chronic symptoms I was experiencing. Within a few days, my eyes had stopped itching and soon after that, all the redness went away too. I stopped using Avenova for about a week and my symptoms immediately returned. As soon as I returned to my Avenova regimen, my symptoms were once again under control. I now know how important practicing daily lid and lash hygiene with Avenova is to managing my blepharitis. I call Avenova a "miracle product" and believe in it so fervently that I am recommending it to my family members who also have blepharitis. No other product has given me the relief Avenova provides! Thank you NovaBay and your wonderful Customer Care Department for going above and beyond to ensure that I continue to be a satisfied customer. — JD

After wearing contacts without problems for 20 years I was diagnosed with MGD and blepharitis and after 2 weeks of using Avenova my eyes have never felt or looked better. I'm definitely impressed! — EJM

Avenova is the answer to my prayers! Thank you NovaBay Pharmaceuticals for the fantastic, natural product you have created for eye problems. Having blepharitis is a challenge, especially being a woman. I was diagnosed over a year ago. Giving up my mascara, only wearing it for special events has been difficult. Sunglasses covered my eyes at all times when leaving my home as light bothered me. I had searched for products with no harsh chemicals or antibiotics when a friend who also suffers from blepharitis introduced me to Avenova. Today I use Avenova on a daily basis and would not be without it. — LC

Just wanted to say I've been using Avenova for about 6 weeks. I noticed improvement in my symptoms the very next day, and after that the symptoms went entirely away. I can't believe that for over 10 years of suffering with Dry Eye Syndrome, blepharitis and MGD that there is a product that totally eliminates all the pain, discomfort and swelling. This product is truly a miracle. Thanks so much! — MS

I have been using the product for over a year and it has eliminated my eyelid problems with Blepharitis. I used to use an antibiotic ointment but no longer need it. Avenova is an effective product. — PM

Avenova is absolutely the miracle product for me. I was diagnosed with Sjogren's several years ago including dry eyes and blepharitis along with rosacea. Thus, my eyes were always irritated, red, gritty and puffy. I tried different eye drops including Restasis and even tried LipiFlow treatment, but nothing changed. About 3 months ago, my eye doctor prescribed Avenova; it was difficult to find a local pharmacy to fill it but I was able to order it through an out of state pharmacy. One month after using Avenova, my eyes were less gritty and less red. Now, the redness is gone and I have much less irritation less frequently. I recently recommended Avenova to a friend who lives in Singapore and hope the product is available there soon. Thanks to Avenova, my eyes are feeling so much better after all these years! — EK

This product, Avenova does wonders! I was doing the baby shampoo cleanses, and that never worked for me. Finally, my ophthalmologist recommended that I try Avenova, and it does wonders. I was getting so aggravated because there weren’t any resolutions to my dry eye and blepharitis until I started using this product. I use it as directed by my ophthalmologist. I won't try anything else now. This product is just amazing. My eyes are finally containing moisture. Before using this product, it was little to no moisture even with my eye drops for dry eye. I'm truly satisfied with the outcome. — MD

My doctor’s office provided me with an over-the-counter (OTC) product containing hypochlorous acid for my eyelid condition. I had used Avenova before, and found that Avenova was easier to use than the OTC product. Avenova had a more fluid consistency, it left my lids clean and without debris, and the condition of my eyelid improved. The OTC product was too thick so it made it harder to apply. My eyelashes would be sticking together after using the OTC product, and then in the morning I would wake up with debris left from the cleanser. After using the OTC product for a few weeks, the condition of my eyelid worsened and had more swelling and redness than before I started using it. Because of the problems associated with the OTC product, I made the decision to have my doctor prescribe me with Avenova again so I can get the great results I need. — TN

Love Avenova, it is such a great help for my dry, red, itchy eyes. — DB

I love Avenova! I have clogged meibomian glands and have had problems with dry eye for years. I heard about Avenova through Sara Rosemergy. I began using it the day after she told me about it, and I started to notice results within 2-3 weeks. It has been so refreshing in the morning and evening to spray on my face! I am honestly able to notice a difference in my day-to-day activities and nighttime driving. It has even cleared up my face! Everyone should use Avenova! — MM

From Doctors

Avenova eyelid cleanser is an excellent addition to my treatment of ocular surface disease and blepharitis. This novel solution tested by NovaBay in the laboratory has an impressive antimicrobial activity against the most commonly found bacteria and biofilm along the eyelids and eyelashes.

My patients regularly provide positive feedback while using Avenova; particularly with respect to comfort during application, and with amelioration of itchy, foreign-body sensation of the eyelids.

I’ve been seeing a patient for many years. She has had symptoms of ocular surface disease since at least September of 2009 with symptoms of dryness and watering of her eyes and crusting of her eyes in the morning. She was treated with artificial tears and Pataday as needed for symptoms of ocular allergies. In March of 2010 her Schirmer scores were 13 mm wetting of the test strip in the right eye and 6 mm wetting of the test strip in the left eye (after the instillation of topical proparacaine). Over the ensuing visits she was also treated for a recurrent corneal erosion in the right eye with Muro 128 – 5% sodium chloride drops in the daytime and Muro 128 – 5% sodium chloride ointment at bedtime. She was also prescribed Erythromycin ointment to instill in her eyes at bedtime and eyelid scrubs with baby shampoo. Bepreve was also tried for her symptoms of ocular allergies and Restasis was prescribed as well. She eventually discontinued the Restasis as she felt that it was making her eyelids peel. After this while attending the Spotlight Symposium for Cataract at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology I heard Dr. Richard Lindstrom report of very favorable results that he had seen with his patients using NovaBay’s Avenova. I thought that at this point I had offered M.P. everything else that I could to help with her ongoing symptoms of ocular surface disease. I prescribed Avenova for her on November 17, 2014 and she was delighted with the results. Right away, she got relief from her symptoms that had eluded her (and me) until this time. I saw her again on December 17, 2014 and again on July 16th, 2015; she continues to use Avenova and to enjoy the benefits of relief of her symptoms. Avenova has helped her manage her ocular surface disease that had previously been bothering her for years.

It has been an exciting experience with Avenova. I want to share one case with you briefly: “I have a gentleman in my practice that has been in and out of my care for 25 years. He is a physician at Vanderbilt University and has had a protracted battle with blepharitis for years. He has been treated at Vanderbilt, another well-known eye institute in Cincinnati, and a few other private physicians, all with no substantial relief. He came in unscheduled desperate for help as he was soon scheduled to leave the country for a two-week vacation. His symptoms were the worst I had seen him with. I started him on Avenova on a standard regimen with no other treatment. He phoned me four days later applauding me for the outstanding relief and improvement from the “miracle drug”, as he called it. He truly was jubilant and asked if I would write a note allowing him to pass Avenova through customs for his trip.

For my patients suffering from the symptoms of chronic blepharitis, evaporative dry eye, redness and pruritis, I was always searching for a fast and effective [hygiene] treatment. Unfortunately, I found many of the over-the-counter products to be caustic to the eye and periorbital skin, and for some patients even induced an allergic response. Prescription antibiotics, only partially effective at best, were not something my patients wanted to continue taking long term to control symptoms. Therefore, when Avenova eyelid cleanser became available, I decided to give it a try. In my experience using Avenova routinely with my patients over the last year, I have found it to be well-tolerated. In as little as two weeks or less of twice daily usage, eyelid margin redness has dissipated and meibomian gland inspissation has improved. Patients have less incidence of stye formation and remark how their eyes feel better, less itchy and less dry. I am happy to say that my office colleagues, who were initially skeptical at this new blepharitis [hygiene] treatment, have witnessed for themselves the positive results in my patients. They now have become active prescribers and have decided to order their own supply for the office. We use Avenova in virtually all of our dry eye patients and in our pre-surgical cataract patients to decrease bacterial load prior to surgery. It really is an all-around excellent product! Thank you.

I have to say that it (Avenova) really is amazing and patients love it. I can now sell this to them instead of Rx ointments that make them shiny and/or blurry and, even with insurance, usually cost more! My office will be calling you about getting more, if we haven’t already!

Since using Avenova, many of my (blepharitis) patients have been able to stay off of antibiotics, antibiotic/steroid combinations, and steroid drops and ointments and feel much better.

Under the microscope on a wet prep done by two of our interested O.D.s who specialize in Ocular Surface Disease, Avenova appears to kill Demodex, but it takes a while for them to show no movement, which is how we define “death”. It is hard to check the Demodex respirations, heart or brain activity, so when we can observe no movement, we consider them dead. It might be that a short exposure results in ultimate death, but we are looking with the Demodex in a drop of Avenova. One can usually not eradicate Demodex, just like it is hard and perhaps unhealthy to eliminate all bacteria on the skin or lid surface, but, [based on our testing and clinical observation of Avenova in solution] it appears one can reduce the “over colonization” of Demodex with repeated applications. Tea Tree Oil and Cliradex also work. We do not have enough clinical experience to compare one to the other, but Avenova appears to be effective and is very comfortable for the patient.

I absolutely LOVE your new product (Avenova) and mentioned it in my Dry Eye lecture at the National Optometric Association (NOA). It has been a huge improvement over soap-based lid scrubs for me personally.

I personally think anybody with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Blepharitis, or Rosacea who wants to wear contact lenses should be issued a bottle of Avenova right from the beginning. Using Avenova helps you from having problems down the road.

Avenova has completely transformed the way I manage dry eye and ocular surface disease. Patients love it and its made a tremendous difference in our outcomes. It is a mainstay of treatment in our practice.

Meibomitis and blepharitis are, as has been previously stated, the most common cause of dry eye disease. They impact on upwards of 20 million patients and are chronic diseases. Treatment is geared toward nutritional supplements such as PRN, lid hygiene and control of the bacterial flora that secrete lipases that break down normal fatty acids (triglycerides) to soaps and fatty acids. Chronic use of antibiotics is not tenable and the use of baby shampoo is actually counterproductive as it facilitates the breakdown of triglycerides (that is what soaps do) and worsens the dry eye disease. The AAO preferred practice paper for blepharitis removed baby shampoo a decade ago for this reason. Avenova from NovaBay Pharma offers a long term solution to the reduction of lid flora without the side effects of antibiotics. [NovaBay laboratory studies in solution show that Avenova kills the bacteria commonly found on eyelids.] We have evaluated Avenova in our practice and we are very happy with our initial results.

Many adults suffer from often-painful eye conditions like dry eye and blepharitis. But surprisingly, these conditions also afflict many children. I see many children in my private practice at the Illinois Eye Center on pediatric ophthalmology. Some of them have blepharitis, where bacteria on the eyelids contribute to inflammation, pain, and a crusty buildup of debris on the eyelids. Others have dry eye, where small glands near the eyelid margins, called meibomian glands, get blocked. These glands produce a crucial layer of the tear film that helps keep the eyes lubricated with tears, so the blockage can cause dry eye or inflammation.
In fact, children can be especially at risk for these conditions. The reason is that these problems are caused or exacerbated by bacteria and tiny parasitic mites that live on the eyelids. Children may add to the microbial populations by rubbing their eyes or failing to wash their faces frequently.

But recently, I have turned to a more effective and safer approach—an eyelid hygiene product called Avenova with Neutrox from NovaBay Pharmaceuticals. Avenova makes the inflammation, pain and other problems go away—and that the children say that Avenova feels refreshing, brings quick relief and is easy to use. These attributes also increase compliance, which is a cornerstone of any successful treatment.
