Optometry Advisory Board
Dr. Ahmad Fahmy is the Director of Optometric Services at Minnesota Eye Consultants. He received his professional training and the Doctor of Optometry degree in 2001 from the Illinois College of Optometry. He completed residency training in the perioperative care of glaucoma, anterior segment pathology, and refractive surgery with Minnesota Eye Consultants, P.A. in 2004. He earned Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry in 2004 and joined Minnesota Eye Consultants, P.A. as a staff optometrist also in 2004.
He earned Diplomate designation in the American Board of Optometry in 2014. Dr. Fahmy is an Adjunct Faculty Assistant Professor of the Illinois College of Optometry, and Southern California College of Optometry.
Dr. Fahmy is a devoted advocate of an integrated eye care delivery model and serves as a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s Integrated Practice Committee (IPC).
He is an editorial board peer reviewer for the journal Clinical Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association, Minnesota Optometric Association, Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, and the Optometric Council of Refractive Surgery. He has contributed to book chapters, journal articles, and case studies in non-peer reviewed and peer-reviewed journals including Optometry Times, Ophthalmology Times Europe, Archives of Ophthalmology, and The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He has lectured at educational conferences including the American Academy of Optometry, Minnesota Optometric Association, The Philips Eye Institute, and International Congress in Lima, Peru.
He has been involved in the clinical care of disadvantaged populations and is devoted to continued involvement in the development of philanthropic eye care initiatives. He also remains committed to teaching and mentoring. He is actively involved in numerous clinical research trials and has a special interest in the ocular surface disease.
Dr. Samartino completed his undergraduate study with TriBeta honors in Biology at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. He received his Doctorate of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University.
During his studies at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Dr. Samartino completed externships in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Alaska with clinical honors. Before establishing Premier Eye Associates, he practiced full time in the South Jersey area. During this time, he worked at an ophthalmology practice where he served as the contact lens specialist and practiced medical optometry including care for post operative cataract, retina and LASIK patients.
Dr. Samartino, originally from South Jersey, currently lives in Philadelphia. His interests include watching movies, hiking, watching Philadelphia Union and US Mens National Team play soccer, and playing with is dog, Cessa.
Professional interests include myopia management/orthokeratology, specialty contact lenses, keratoconus, ocular disease, dry eye treatment.
Dr. Guru Dutt Sharma is an Optometry Specialist in Carlsbad, California. He graduated with honors from New England College Of Optometry in 2008. Having more than 12 years of diverse experiences, especially in OPTOMETRY, Dr. Guru Dutt Sharma affiliates with no hospital, cooperates with many other doctors and specialists in medical group Western University Of Health Sciences.
Dr. Jerry Robben grew up in Sharon Springs, Kansas; a small farming community of fewer than 800 people. There he learned a strong work ethic, growing up working on the Robben Family Farm. He is very proud of is an agricultural background but he and his family knew that farming wasn’t his path.
He attended Kansas State University where he was active in a research lab group doing work on cataract prevention and other eye research. Portions of his work, as an undergraduate, were published in peer-reviewed journals.
He graduated from K-State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry. He then used his background in ocular research to attend and graduate from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he received a second Bachelor’s Degree in Vision Science and his Doctorate of Optometry.
After his graduation, he was recruited by a prestigious private ophthalmology practice in South Florida where he continued his training in ocular disease and surgical care as the clinical supervisor of the practice. He was also in charge of their large student doctor externship program. He held this position for two years before looking to further his career at Bowden Eye & Associates. Dr. Robben feels the extra training at this practice was vital to prepare him for that next step.
Dr. Robben came to Bowden Eye & Associates to expand his scope of practice in ocular disease; specifically, glaucoma, dry eye disease, eye infections, and primary eye care including glasses and contacts. He loves to continue to learn from Dr. Frank W. Bowden, III, and the other physicians as the technologies and knowledge in eye care continue to advance. Dr. Robben is now a senior member of our provider team and is the Chief Optometrist at Bowden Eye.
Having a background in clinical education, Dr. Robben has started a student doctor externship program here at Bowden Eye. He is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor for the Arizona College of Optometry where he supervises the 4th Year Optometry Resident Doctors that are currently completing their externships for graduation at Midwestern University-Arizona, College of Optometry.
Dr. Robben’s background in research has helped to grow an active clinical research team within Bowden Eye & Associates. He is the Director of Clinical Research for our practice and heads the team in multiple clinical studies that are investigating new treatments and diagnostics in the fields of Glaucoma, Dry Eye Disease, Conjunctivitis, and other ocular diseases. Bowden Eye & Associates has been recognized as a new leader in research for eye care and we are currently working with companies globally to help them with their studies.
Dr. Robben has become a leader in the treatment and management of Dry Eye Disease and has been recognized as a national speaker and educator on the subject. He frequently speaks in educational settings for optometrists, technicians, and ophthalmologists all across the country. He has also been recently added as a glaucoma speaker and educator for a national speaking bureau.
In his spare time, he enjoys watching football, being a Dad, and traveling with his family. Dr. Robben is proud to make Jacksonville his home and loves to build lasting relationships with his patients in the community.
Dr. Thakore joined NEEC after a number of years as an Attending Optometrist at Dimock Health Center in Roxbury, the largest optometric teaching program for the New England College of Optometry. She also worked in both London, UK and Kenya as an optometrist for several years.
Dr. Thakore is a member of the American Academy of Optometry, the American Optometric Association and the Massachusetts Society of Optometry.

Dr. Laura F Kay is an Optometry Specialist in Springfield, Missouri. She graduated with honors in 2016. Educated at the University of California, Berkeley, and having completed a residency program at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs hospital in primary care, Dr. Cheung brings over twelve years of experience to Southwest Eye Care. This experience includes LASIK evaluations, recent onset red eye, diabetic exams, children’s first eye exams, treating glaucoma, and contact lens fittings. This broad range of experience has really allowed Dr. Cheung to provide stellar eye care, while retaining the personal touch that he believes is crucial to a successful doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Cheung is also a new father, and with this new perspective in his life, he enjoys seeing all of his patients thrive as the years pass, because he believes that life is precious.

Dr. Crowley graduated cum laude from Fitchburg State University and with clinical honors from Nova Southeastern University – College of Optometry.
She was appointed National Liaison to the AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section where she worked amongst top specialists in anterior segment disease and contact lenses. She was honored as a member of the Optometric Gold Key Honor Society in 2015.
Dr. Crowley practices comprehensive medical optometry and takes particular interest in dry eye and challenging contact lens fits. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section and Massachusetts Society of Optometrists.
Suzanne Walter Sherman, O.D., F.A.A.O is Assistant Professor of Optometric Sciences (in Ophthalmology), Director of Optometric Services at Columbia University Medical Center and an Assistant Attending at New York-Presbyterian Columbia. She specializes in complex and medically necessary contact lens fittings, anterior segment disease and primary care.
Dr. Sherman received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan with a degree in Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science. Dr. Sherman graduated from SUNY College of Optometry and elected to the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honors Society. She completed her optometric residency in Ocular Disease and Primary Care at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center.
She is board certified by the American Board of Optometry and National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO). Dr. Sherman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Sherman is also dedicated to research and has contributed in peer-reviewed scientific articles in publications such as Review of Optometry (RO), Review of Optometry: Cornea and Contact Lens (ROCCL) Optometric Vision and Science (OVS), Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and American Academy of Optometry (AAO). Dr. Sherman has presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and Global Specialty Contact Lens Symposium (GSLS).
